PHLB 1110. Phlebotomy Concepts Lecture & Laboratory
6 Credits (3+6P)
A special course covering the basic concepts and skills involved in phlebotomy and laboratory procedures. The first half of the course includes didactic instruction (60 hours) of basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical legal and ethical issues, patient care, best practices, and quality assurance. The Laboratory (10 hours) addresses collection and handling of blood and non-blood specimens, patient communication skills, and ethical considerations. Prepare students for clinical skills rotations. Course standards are based on the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute, Needlestick Prevention Act, Joint Commission, 2008 National Safety Goals, OSHA, and CDC. The second half of the course includes application of skills through 90 hours practicum, providing hands on experiences in a supervised work environment collecting blood specimens from patients at local Laboratory draw facilities. Attendance is MANDATORY. Prepare students for employment and entry level phlebotomist in health care settings. May be repeated up to 6 credits.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify basic Anatomy and Physiology as it pertains to the circulatory system to effectively locate veins for blood collection.
- Perform various blood collection techniques, including venipuncture and capillary puncture, while adhering to healthcare regulations and facility safety and infection control protocols.
- Identify variables that affect procedures and results; take appropriate corrective action when needed.
- Demonstrate infection control measures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Demonstrate skills to communicate effectively with patients, including explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring patient comfort during blood collection.
- Practice proper procedures for labeling, handling, and transporting blood specimens to maintain integrity and prevent contamination.
- Meet requirements to sit for the Phlebotomist Certification Exam, Including 100 clinical hours (10 Laboratory hours+90 rotation hours) and 100 successful unassisted venipunctures.
PHLB 1190. Phlebotomist Basic
4 Credits (3+3P)
This course provides the latest information, techniques, skills, and equipment for blood and specimen collection based on the standards of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, Needlestick Prevention Act, Joint Commission 2008 National Patient Safety Goals, OSHA and CDC. An advanced skills Laboratory is included in the course to provide a "hands-on" practice experience and a 30 hour practicum in a supervised work environment collecting blood and specimens on actual patients for Laboratory tests. Attendance is mandatory. Prepares students for employment as a phlebotomist in health care settings. Requires a "C" or better to pass. Upon successful completion of the course, student has the opportunity to test for National Health Career Certification.
Prerequisite/Corequisite: BIOL 1130G or BIOL 2225.
